R is for Resilience

R is for Resilience.

Resilience is the theme for the A to Z Blog Challenge this year. The American Psychological Association defines resilience as:

Resilience is the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands.

Many people say, “Children are so resilient.” Yes, children can adapt as they try to navigate changes in their lives, but they are not automatically resilient. Children need to be taught coping strategies to help support resilience. Once again, picture books come to the rescue to help model and discuss how to overcome challenges. Here is a great list of books to begin or continue the resilience conversation. Teachers, parents and caregivers can help lay the foundation to overcoming challenges through modeling and discussion. This is an excellent article, written in 2020, specifically around the idea that not all children are resilient, tied into the global pandemic.

Wishing you strength to overcome your own personal challenges and power to become more resilience.
