On this Valentine’s Day, I invite you to celebrate LOVE with picture books. At home, picture books have the ability to help model the importance of spending time by creating a cozy, reading routine. In the classroom, picture books can be used to teach a variety of academic concepts, social and emotional skills and can celebrate love around the world through cultures and lives that are different from our own. Books can be a window into the lives of others to help build kindness, empathy and compassion. While the list of beautiful picture books that celebrate love is long, below are a few of my favorites:
I Am Love: A Book of Compassion by: Susan Verde
Love Like Chocolate by: Tracy Banghart
Love Is by: Diane Adams
Hair Love by: Matthew A. Cherry
A Little Spot of Love by: Diane Alber
Love Made Me More by: Colleen Rowan Kosinski

I would also like to remind you to LOVE YOURSELF. Practicing self-love is a great way to show kindness to yourself. We are often our own toughest critic and frequently compare ourselves to others. Stop today and take a moment for you. Breathe deeply. Think of at least one thing you love about yourself. What makes you feel proud? What brings you joy? What do you love about you?

In The Kindness Machine, I included the idea of self-love. I hope that by hearing this early in a picture book, children will began to grow their own idea of what they love about themselves. This idea may change from one reading of the story to the next. I also secretly hope that the grown up reading the book aloud gets a gentle reminder to love themself.
