O is for Outline

O is for Outline.

Raise your hand if you are a plotter? What about a pantser? Raise your hand if you have no idea what I’m talking about?

A plotter is someone who typically outlines, plans and maps out their writing. A pantser often “flies by the seat of their pants” and writes without a set order or map. I find that I am a bit of both. I like to have an idea of where I am going but find myself rearranging thoughts or sections as I go along.

There isn’t a right or wrong way to write. You have to find what works for you. The most common theme I have heard from other writers is not how they outline or don’t outline, but when they find the time. If I am able to write in the mornings, I am more methodical and outlined. But, if that idea sparks late at night, I will frantically write it however it seems to flow out of my brain and then work on it when I am fresh the next day.

Whatever method works for you, lean into that and write on.
