Y is for Young at Heart

Y is for YOUNG AT HEART.

Have you noticed how the littlest things through a child’s eyes are magical? A rainbow, a flower, the shape of a cloud, etc. When my son was five, he was playing in a soccer game, stopped dead in the field and pointed out a rainbow to his coach. Slowing down, to stop at literally, “smell the roses” can be very beneficial. To grow older, but still hold on to child-like enthusiasm and excitement for life seems to be a great secret.

My grandparents have been married for over 60 years. They are in their 80’s, but when I tell people about them I often say, “They are really 18 at heart.” They laugh, joke, tell stories and are a joy to spend time with. They seem to channel their inner child which helps them laugh hard and more importantly, laugh often.

Find what makes you feel that joy. Look for the little things that children find fascinating. Take an extra minute to look at the clouds and find a silly shape. Listen to the song that makes you happy. Indulge in your favorite dessert. Take a minute and simply take a deep breath, then stick out your tongue, stand on one foot and make a silly face, just like a child would do.

What did you love best about your childhood self? Can that favorite part join you as an adult?

  1. I love this post! I think you just desribed my “old age goal”: other people saying about me that I’m channeling my inner child, just ilke your grand parents. As a matter of fact I am already practicing. Just like your son, I’m s sucker for rainbows 🌈 and pretty clouds 🌥️. I’ll stop my car to take pictures.
Oh, and you don’t have to tell me twice to enjoy my sweets. i’m on it! 🧁

Thanks for this feel-good post and happy Friday! 🥂🍾
