U is for UPLIFTING.
Surround yourself with people who make you feel good. People who see your worth and value. People who lift you up when times are tough. When I was a rotten teenager, I used to roll my eyes and scowl at my parents. My dad would always say, “You know, you use more muscles in your face to make that mad face than you would if you just smiled.” This inspired another eye roll and heavy sigh but he was totally right. This is a phrase I frequently use with my own kids and students.
We can help model uplifting behavior through our words and actions. We do not have to constantly be a cheerleader, there can be some tough love as well. We can be uplifting and honest at the same time. The goal is that the children in our lives will lift others up through their own words and actions.
