H is for Honesty

H is for Honesty.

No one likes to get in trouble. Children very quickly figure out that they can change a story because they are scared of a punishment. Teaching the importance of honesty to children will help them as they continue to grow. As a parent, my husband and I find ourselves saying, “You know you can tell us anything, right? Even if you are nervous, it is better to tell the truth than get caught in a lie.” This is such a challenging concept for young children because it is hard to think beyond the initial telling of the truth which may be uncomfortable.

Here is a great list of books to help teach honesty. I would also recommend A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue by Julia Cook. Sometimes when you tell a young child that it is important to be honest and tell, they take that to the extreme and tell you EVERYTHING and it becomes tattling.

  1. Great subject! Children really need the confidence to be honest, and they should be acknowledged and praised for honesty even when circumstances might warrant punishment. I have unfortunately encountered adults who find it easy to float an untruth with great ease. Dishonesty can lead to terrible consequences later in life. Honesty is a theme of one of my children’s books in progress. Thanks for writing about this subject — feel like I am on the right track.
