U is for Unfair

How Do You Spell Unfair? MacNolia Cox and the National Spelling Bee
Written by: Carole Boston Weatherford
Illustrated by: Frank Morrison

MacNolia loved words and actually read the dictionary! In 8th grade she won her school spelling bee and advanced to a state competition. She then went to Washington D.C. for the National Spelling Bee. It is here that we see racism and segregation. She overcame obstacles and competed in the National Spelling Bee. She was given a word not on the approved list as her final word. Although she did not win first place, she was a finalist. She proved she could overcome discrimination and compete just like anyone else.
