I is for Interpreter

The Interpreter
Written by: Olivia Abtahi
Illustrated by: Monica Arnaldo

This stunning story, while not true nonfiction, was inspired by the author’s life growing up and can be true for many children.

Young Cecilia was a kid…but also an interpreter for her parents. This book skillfully shows the challenges a family faces when English is not their first language. It shows the beauty of a child helping with things that most children do not help their parents with. It also shows how heavy this “job” is and how it makes a child feel. The book finds a lovely balance for the entire family.

  1. I had a 4 year student who interpreted for his parents who were both deaf. Fascinating and wonderful family
