The Name Jar
Written & Illustrated by: Yangsook Choi
Unhei is new at school and embarrassed by her name. After getting suggestions from her classmates in a name jar and with a little encouragement from a new friend, she ends up deciding that her name is beautiful. All of names are unique and should be pronounced correctly to help celebrate the name.
If you do not know how to pronounce someones name, just ask. Instead of not using someones name or pronouncing it incorrectly, take a moment to ask.

What a lovely idea for helping children appreciate their names when they are embarrassed by them or don’t like them!

I work with a lot of international people and I try really hard to pronounce their names correctly and I feel bad when I don’t succeed. A lot of people don’t pronounce my last name correctly and I’ve even had people misspell it while I’m spelling it out for them.
